You can win a price upto to $300,000 USD in the Android Developer Challenge. Google offers good tools and writing for Android is very easy. All tools are available for free. Why not start immedately?

I too started programming for Android. I don't know where my chances are but will try anyway. I hope to finish my first project for Android and submit it to the challenge.

The challenge is split into two rounds. In round 1 you have time until March 31, 2008 and can win $25,000 USD and are qualified for round 2.

If you are one of the 50 lucky ones to win a price in phase 1 you can continue with phase 2 and eventually win upto $275,000 USD (10 à $275,000 USD and 10 à $100,000 USD)

A second challenge will be started in the second half of 2008 when handsets will be physically available.

Install in the following order:

1. Sun Java SDK
2. Eclipse
3. Android SDK
4. Eclipse plugin
